HIV/AIDS has kept global child mortality rates high, despite advances over the decades, a UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) report has said.
According to its 'Global Child Survival and Health' report, AIDS was one of the biggest threats to child health with mortality rates in 14 countries - nine of which are in sub-Saharan Africa - having increased primarily due to the pandemic.
"With the advances of the past five decades, we could ... break the back of the AIDS pandemic, but we need greater political will and action," UNICEF's Canada director Nigel Fisher said.
The agency has called for integrated treatment and prevention programmes to urgently be made available to all children to curb the pandemic.
