Teenage pregnancies and unsafe abortions are on the increase in Kenya, despite the impact of HIV/AIDS on the 15 to 24 age group, officials have said.
According to Kenya's Director of Medical Services James Nyikal, the problem could be attributed to a limited availability of youth-friendly reproductive health services.
A US $97 million intervention aimed at addressing the situation was in the process of being implemented, but would need the backing of international donors.
"This is an enormous amount of money and I would like to ask donors to help the government meet the budget," the local Nation newspaper quoted Nyikal as saying.
