AIDS cure crackpots draw Govt action

    JOHANNESBURG

    People seeking "quick money" through false claims of HIV/AIDS cures could experience the full effect of the law, Cameroon's Health Minister, Urbain Olanguena Awono, has warned.

    The frequency of claims being made in the local media could also lead to print and audiovisual publishers being threatened with legal action.

    Cameroon's Post newspaper quoted Awono as saying, "Cameroonian law of 1988 prohibits the advertising of dangerous and toxic products. According to this law, only the Minister of Public Health has the authority to approve the advertisement of pharmaceutical products."

    Awono expressed concern over these claims often being in direct conflict with the scientifically proven benefits of antiretrovirals.
