Russian cash injection for Global Fund

Russia announced an additional allocation of US $20 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria on Friday.

Alexander Makarenko, director of the Foreign Ministry's Africa Department, told the local Interfax news agency that the latest cash injection would bring Russia's overall contributions to the Fund to $40 million since 2002.

Makarenko said that as president of the Group of Eight (G8) industrialised nations, Russia was determined to ensure continuity of the G8's work in Africa in 2006.
