World Bank AIDS millions approved

Ghana has secured a US $20 million anti-AIDS loan from the International Development Association (IDA), a division of the World Bank that provides interest-free loans to impoverished countries. Bank officials said earlier this week that the credit was approved as a follow-up to the IDA-financed Ghana AIDS Response Fund project (GARFUND). "The continued participation of the Bank in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Ghana is critical in achieving Ghana's objectives of reducing new HIV/AIDS/STI transmission and mitigating the impact of related morbidity and mortality", said Laura Rose, the Bank's task team leader of GARFUND. According to Ghana's AIDS Commission, the nation's relatively low HIV prevalence rate of 3.4 percent had not declined, despite costly publicity and control measures.
