US funding for herbal AIDS alternative meds

Just over $1 million has been allocated by the US government for a study to evaluate the effectiveness of African traditional medicines in the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

The US Embassy in South Africa said the trials are expected to test the safety and efficacy of plant-based therapies already being used in response to AIDS in parts of the continent, such as the sutherlandia plant and African wormwood.

The International Centre for Indigenous Phytotherapy Studies, a collaborative research effort involving many US and South African research institutions, has been elected to lead the trials.
