Britain to double Global Fund annual pledge

The UK is to double its annual pledge to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, British international development secretary Hilary Benn said on Friday.

Britain already accounts for 20 percent of the total world expenditure on the fight against HIV/AIDS, and the additional funding makes it the fourth largest donor to the Fund.

Reuters quoted Benn as saying, "The UK is committed to the fight against AIDS. The Global Fund needs more money and we hope other donors will also significantly increase their contributions."

The additional funds have increased Britain's contribution to the Fund from US $89.5 million a year to more than $175 million for 2006 and 2007.
