UN urges "long-term" perspective on AIDS battle

Long-term planning is needed if the global fight against HIV/AIDS is to be successful, UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot has said.

Piot was addressing the 3rd International AIDS Conference in Brazil this week, at which experts and policymakers are discussing recent advances in AIDS research and ways of translating these into practice.

"As we take emergency actions to ensure universal access to HIV prevention and treatment, we must also establish systems critical to achieving longer-term solutions, such as vaccine and microbicides," Piot told the gathering.

He urged delegates to question whether their planning would make a difference in five years' time, as well as in 20 years.
