The European Commission (EC) released US $1.2 million this week to help tackle HIV/AIDS in the Libyan port of Benghazi.
The pledge follows talks earlier this year between EC Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and Libyan officials over the case of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor, who have been accused of infecting 400 children with HIV in Benghazi.
In a statement she said: "AIDS is a global challenge to modern medicine. With today's package we can share the best of European expertise with Libya to improve its capacity to tackle this terrible disease."
Ferrero-Waldner was hopeful that the assistance would help improve the situation of the infected children.
