The Group of Eight (G8) industrialised nations have decided on an immediate doubling of aid to Africa to allow the continent to tackle poverty and disease.
At the end of their annual meeting on Friday, G8 leaders agreed to aid amounting to US $25 million per year, as well as proposals on international trade, broader access to anti-AIDS treatment and debt cancellation for the world's poorest countries.
The BBC quoted British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who chaired the G8 meeting, as saying: "It isn't all everyone wanted, but it is progress. All of this does not change the world tomorrow: it is a beginning, not an end."
