UN elects Thailand to assist in combating AIDS

The UN Development Programme launched an initiative at a recent meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, to foster partnerships between Thailand and Africa in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Thailand is one of the first countries to have achieved the Millennium Development Goal of reversing the spread of HIV by 2015, well in advance of the target date.

The initiative seeks to promote the exchange of experiences, lessons learned and best practices by Thailand in its own anti-AIDS campaign.

Dr Thawat Suntharacharn, director-general of the Thai ministry's disease control department, said his country's AIDS experts would help 10 African countries develop frameworks for the treatment and care of patients and people living with HIV/AIDS.

Suntharacharn was quoted by Kenyan newspaper The Nation as saying: "This experience will be shared with African countries in mapping out strategies for them."
