The World Bank has urged greater attention to Africa's needs as HIV/AIDS threatens the economic progress made in recent years.
According to the international lending institution, sub-Saharan Africa's estimated 700 million people in 47 countries present the world with its most formidable development challenge.
But World Bank chief Paul Wolfowitz noted that the annual G8 summit, to be held in Scotland next week, offered a glimmer of hope for the impoverished continent.
The Associated Press quoted him as saying, "There is ... no question that there are needs - but there is a lot more going on than need: Africa may be on the verge of being a continent of hope."
Helping African economies improve and eradicating poverty are expected to be one of the main topics during the meeting.
