Drop in AIDS numbers

The findings of a new government survey show that Zimbabwe's HIV prevalence rate is lower than was previously thought. Research conducted over 18 months by the country's health ministry, UNAIDS and the US Centers for Disease Control suggested that prevalence rates have dropped from 24.6 percent two years ago to 21.3 percent at present. Health and Child Welfare Minister David Parirenyatwa said strengthened national AIDS awareness campaigns and changes in risky sexual behaviour could bring about further reduction. He told the official Herald newspaper, "We want to reach the lowest figures possible ... [it] is something we can achieve if people change their mindsets."
