Government AIDS funding increase announced

    JOHANNESBURG
    Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has announced plans to increase the HIV/AIDS allocation in the national budget, according to the local East African Standard newspaper. Kibaki beefed up the allocation in response to a recent request by Health Minister Charity Ngilu to make antiretroviral drugs freely available. At least US $330 million has been set aside for tackling the pandemic in the current financial year, but this will be increased to $630 million in 2009 or 2010. The expanded budget allocation is to be disbursed in accordance with the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan, which was established to address the impact of the disease, especially among women and girls.
