Former UNICEF boss urges greater protection of children

Former UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) chief Carol Bellamy says much more needs to be done to protect children from HIV/AIDS and other hardships.

Bellamy, who stepped down at the weekend after 10 years as UNICEF executive director, said nearly half of all children alive today were effectively being robbed of their childhood by the triple threat of AIDS, conflict and poverty.

"It is essential that we invest more in the health, well-being and protection of children ... We are moving in a positive direction when it comes to children, but it has not been nearly enough," the Associated Press quoted the former UNICEF boss as saying.

Bellamy is succeeded by former US agriculture secretary Ann Veneman.
