Sex education to be broadened in schools

    JOHANNESBURG

    The authorities in Namibia are seeking ways of strengthening sexual health education in schools to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on youth.

    According to the local 2001 Population and Housing Census, young people aged between 10 and 24 account for 60 percent of all new HIV infections.

    "There is increasing recognition that the education sector has an important role to play in the prevention of HIV infection," a senior ministry of education official, Patti Swartz, told Inter Press Service.

    More Namibian teachers are currently being trained in AIDS education under a Global AIDS Fund initiative.
