Gauteng province to increase AIDS treatment sites

The number of sites providing free anti-AIDS drugs in South Africa's Gauteng province is set to increase by the end of next month.

In his opening address to the provincial legislature on Monday, Gauteng Premiere Mbhazima Shilowa said this would increase the 19 facilities already in operation to 26.

According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Shilowa noted that the original target had been 23 sites.

He said at least 10,220 HIV-positive people were currently accessing treatment through the existing sites.
