Kenya has announced plans to raise the number of people on anti-AIDS treatment at public health facilities from 28,000 to 95,000 by the end of 2005.
According to Minister of Health Charity Ngilu, the government hoped to achieve this target by reducing the cost of antiretrovirals and HIV testing.
People accessing the drugs are currently spending close to US $7 for a month's supply of AIDS medication.
A local newspaper, The Nation, quoted Ngilu as saying: "My ministry is consulting with donors and stakeholders to reduce the cost of such drugs and of laboratory tests. The final [pricing] decision will be announced by the end of the month."
