UK to tackle AIDS during G8 presidency

    JOHANNESBURG

    British Prime Minister Tony Blair says HIV/AIDS and other problems facing Africa will be a priority when the UK takes the helm of the G8 group of industrialised nations next year.

    It was important to realise that Africa was not "a continent without hope", he told the BBC, and helping it deal with the crisis was a "moral question".

    "Part of the problem is that I think people get fatigued and tired with looking at Africa because it all seems so hopeless - it isn't. There are things that can be done, and there are real success stories," Blair said.

    An estimated 25 million people in Africa are living with HIV and AIDS.
