Pandemic of women abuses fuel AIDS - report

    JOHANNESBURG

    The international human rights group, Amnesty International, said on Wednesday that a global "pandemic of violence" against women was fuelling the spread of HIV and AIDS.

    "The increasing spread of HIV/AIDS among women and sexual violence are interlinked," the group pointed out in its 'Annual Report 2004', released just a day after the UN 'AIDS Epidemic Update 2004'.

    Amnesty charged that mass rape and sexual violence in conflicts, coupled with collapsing health systems in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, put women at much greater risk of HIV infection.

    Governments were urged to be just as diligent in tackling violence against women as they were about their fight against AIDS.
