UN report highlights global AIDS toll

    JOHANNESBURG

    The UN has warned that without urgent action the world is unlikely to gain the upper hand against HIV/AIDS.

    In their annual 'AIDS Epidemic Update 2004' report, released on Tuesday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNAIDS estimate that AIDS-related illnesses will have claimed the lives of 3.1 million people globally by the end of 2004.

    According to the two agencies, this is the highest figure in any one year and 200,000 more than the mortality figure for 2003.

    "The number of people living with HIV has been rising in every region. A massive effort is needed to achieve a response to that, which matches the global AIDS epidemic," the report said.
