Third Indian drug firm withdraws from WHO AIDS list

    JOHANNESBURG

    Another Indian generic drug manufacturer, Hetero Drugs, has withdrawn six of its anti-AIDS medicines from the World Health Organisation's (WHO) prequalification list.

    The move followed inspections by the UN health agency at the laboratories contracted by Hetero to carry out bioequivalence testing, which confirms that the drugs are as effective as the original brand-name medicine.

    "It's become clear that some of the data gathered to show the bioequivalence of these generic drugs ... was not satisfactory," Agence France-Presse quoted WHO spokesman Iain Simpson as saying.

    This brings to three the number of Indian drug firms with AIDS drugs struck off the the WHO list when Ranbaxy and Cipla also withdrew drugs earlier this year.
