Limpopo premier gets tough on school AIDS education

The Premier of South Africa's Limpopo province, Sello Moloto, has warned school principals and teachers about the consequences of failing to educate pupils about HIV/AIDS.

A local newspaper, The Pretoria News, quoted Moloto as saying: "The weakness is that such a subject is not an examinable subject and, as such, many teachers don't take it seriously. They teach it when they feel like it - they don't give pupils the necessary knowledge to deal with HIV and AIDS."

Moloto attributed the increased HIV infection rate and high level of teenage pregnancy in the province to this lack of education and promised to get tough on defaulting educators.

Primary anti-AIDS campaigns aimed at pupils fall under life-skills subjects in the syllabus.
