Five African first ladies are in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, to review the continent's achievements in combating HIV/AIDS over the past year and map new strategies for the next two years.
The Organisation of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA), created in Geneva in 2002, is expected to make presentations on activities, challenges and plans of action.
A statement by Rwandan First Lady and chair of the OAFLA, Jeannette Kagame, read: "We want to move from compassion and advocacy to action ... we are determined to use all means at our disposal to combat this killer disease."
An estimated 26.6 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa are living with HIV/AIDS, and some 3.2 million new infections were recorded in 2003.
