Local AIDS drug production expected

    JOHANNESBURG

    People living with HIV/AIDS in Zambia could soon benefit from the local manufacture of anti-AIDS drugs.

    PHARCO, a pharmaceutical firm partly owned by the government, announced that it was ready to begin a three-month drug trial on 28 HIV-positive volunteers.

    A senior PHARCO employee said the firm would start full production of antiretroviral drugs once the trials had ended successfully.

    A local newspaper, the Daily Mail, quoted PHARCO general manager Johan Richter as saying: "The plant will be able to produce a quantity of at least 150,000 treatments per year. Production capacity will be increased when and if required."
