Blair can use G8 to fund AIDS - UN

    A senior UN official has urged increased funding from the UK to tackle HIV and AIDS in Africa.

    Launching the 'Stop AIDS Campaign' in London recently, the UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, Stephen Lewis, said British Prime Minister Tony Blair should take advantage of Britain's upcoming presidency of the G8 to channel more funds to the continent.

    Lewis noted that although there was a "real momentum" to provide anti-AIDS treatment to HIV-positive people in Africa, there was also a "lack of money".

    He said: "If Tony Blair wants to turn the G8 on its head, he can do so. It didn't happen in Canada; it didn't happen in Japan; it can presumably happen in the UK."
