ADF eases effect of AIDS and poverty on children

    JOHANNESBURG
    The African Development Fund (ADF), a concessional window of the African Development Bank, has earmarked over US $20 million for a programme to ease the impact of HIV/AIDS and poverty on Zambian children. A combination of widespread poverty and HIV/AIDS in Zambia has resulted in an upsurge in the number of orphans and vulnerable children, currently estimated at over 1.5 million. Authorities say the situation has created a social development problem, which the country is trying to tackle as part of its poverty reduction strategy. The ADF funds will provide protection to the children by improving access to social services such as nutrition, education and life skills development opportunities.
