South Africa's largest gold mining company, Harmony, estimates that up to a third of its workforce are living with HIV and AIDS, according to a local newspaper, Business Day.
In its latest annual report, the company noted that the incidence of HIV/AIDS in South Africa "poses risks to Harmony in terms of potentially reduced productivity and other costs", but said its intention was to achieve the healthiest workforce possible.
The company was well on the way with its "healthiest workforce campaign, which provides quality healthcare equivalent to private hospital standards to all employees", the report said.
