Irish rock star Bono told the annual conference of the UK's Labour Party on Wednesday that HIV/AIDS was killing thousands of Africans daily because rich nations were failing the people.
Reuter quoted Bono as saying: "6,500 Africans dying a day of treatable, preventable disease - dying for want of medicines you and I can get at our local chemist - that's not a cause, that's an emergency."
He urged British Prime Minister Tony Blair to make the most of his opportunity in 2005 when the UK takes up the presidency of the G8 group of most industrialised nations.
Blair has vowed to make Africa, once branded as "the scar on the conscience of the world", a priority during Britain's presidency of the G8 by setting up the Africa Commission, a group of experts charged with finding solutions for the continent.
