Study underway to develop AIDS strategies

    JOHANNESBURG

    Angola's health ministry has started collecting blood samples from pregnant women to determine the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

    The research, supported by the Centres of Disease Control, the World Health Organisation (WHO), the UN Children's Fund, and other government partners, is being conducted at 26 sites throughout the country.

    WHO said the findings would reveal which regions and sub-groups were most affected by HIV/AIDS and assist health authorities in developing strategies to tackle the pandemic.

    The government expects to provide greater access to antiretrovirals by late next year.
