AIDS efforts discussed at Red Cross meeting

    JOHANNESBURG

    Some 700 aid officials are currently in Algiers for the 6th Pan African Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies conference on food security, HIV/AIDS and other diseases in Africa.

    The gathering aims to fortify partnerships between the federation, other agencies and governments, which often have the financing and know-how for various projects but may lack ties to the relevant communities.

    Red Cross spokesman Roy Probert said the federation's volunteers "are able to access communities, even households ... to deliver what our partners have to offer, from vaccinations to home-based care for people living with HIV/AIDS."
