New AIDS initiative assists developing nations

    JOHANNESBURG

    A new initiative between UNAIDS and Brazil aims to scale up the response to HIV/AIDS in developing countries.

    As part of the joint initiative, an International Centre for Technical Cooperation on AIDS will be established in Brazil by UNAIDS to build technical capacity needed by developing countries for tackling the disease.

    UNAIDS executive director Peter Piot said in a statement, "The new initiative will give other countries the necessary tools to effectively fight HIV/AIDS, now that financing is greatly increasing. Making this money work is now a priority."

    Piot said it was appropriate that the first centre would be established in partnership with Brazil, as the country had demonstrated unrivalled leadership and creativity in responding to the pandemic.
