EU promises more AIDS funding

    JOHANNESBURG

    A 12-member European Union (EU) delegation to Uganda has lauded the country's efforts in tackling HIV/AIDS.

    Elly Leemhuis, a senior nutrition advisor in the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, promised more funding for Uganda's anti-AIDS programmes while visiting the Naguru Teenage Information and Health Centre, a youth NGO that operates in the capital, Kampala.

    Leemhuis was quoted by a local newspaper, New Vision, as saying, "We think that Uganda has a very important role to play in the rest of Africa as far as the fight against HIV/AIDS is concerned."

    She noted that her government currently held the presidency of the EU and would also step up its contributions to the UN Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA).
