South African Deputy President Jacob Zuma has called for an intensified effort to tackle HIV/AIDS and the stigma associated with it.
He said AIDS prevalence was high in South Africa and almost everybody was affected, but openness about the disease could ensure that prevention campaigns had the necessary impact.
BuaNews, the government news agency, quoted Zuma as saying, "It is difficult to destroy a silent and unseen enemy. When people are open about the disease, they would be more receptive to positive messages."
Research shows that South Africa has one of the highest prevalence rates in the world, with an estimated 5.3 million, or one in nine people, living with the HI virus.
