Half of prison TB deaths AIDS-related

    JOHANNESBURG

    A study conducted earlier this year by the Uganda Prisons Service has revealed that 40 percent of deaths in prisons are due to Tuberculosis (TB), a local newspaper, New Vision, reported.

    However, at a workshop on the human rights situation in prisons held in the capital, Kampala, independent consultants Winsor Consult Ltd attributed 20 percent of those deaths to HIV/AIDS-related illnesses.

    During a presentation of the draft findings, Silver Ssewanyana, a senior Winsor consultant, said the situation was heightened by overcrowding.

    Research shows that some 14 million of the estimated 38 million HIV-positive people worldwide are co-infected with TB, of whom 70 percent live in sub-Saharan Africa.
