Huge pledge for condom promotion

    JOHANNESBURG

    Germany has granted Uganda more than US $4.6 million for the promotion of condoms, behavioural change and for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections like HIV/AIDS.

    The grant agreement was signed recently between German ambassador Alexander Muhlen and Secretary to the Treasury Chris Kassami at Uganda's Ministry of Finance and Planning headquarters, in the capital, Kampala.

    This was despite an announcement earlier this month by Ugandan Minister of Information, James Nsaba Buturo, that the government would not promote condom use in the new phase of its fight against HIV/AIDS.

    A local newspaper, New Vision, reported that the funds would be channelled through the German Development Bank and used to promote the Life Guard condom brand, developed by the reproductive and sexual health NGO, Marie Stopes International.
