Health minister hampers AIDS programme - TAC

South African AIDS lobby group Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) has accused Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang of obstructing the government's anti-AIDS programme.

Speaking recently at Johannesburg's Witwatersrand University on the effects of HIV/AIDS on the country's development, TAC chairman Zackie Achmat told students that Tshabalala-Msimang's poor leadership was doing the programme more harm than good.

According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Achmat said he believed the government had a great programme in place to tackle the pandemic, but the health minister did not reflect government's policies relating to the disease.

The TAC leader urged greater political will if South Africa was to tackle HIV and AIDS successfully.
