Possible suspension of sale of AIDS drugs

Uganda's National Drug Authority (NDA) has been ordered to suspend the sale of antiretroviral drugs on the open market. The director general of health services, Peter Mugyenyi, made the recommendation after reports that some medical practitioners were selling counterfeit versions of anti-AIDS drugs to HIV-positive patients. According to a local newspaper, New Vision, the director general said containers resembling those used to sell authentic antiretrovirals were being used to sell the rip-offs. Mugyenyi also highlighted the dangers of health professionals incorrectly prescribing AIDS drugs, saying: "If you are a doctor and not yet exposed to antiretroviral management, do not administer [AIDS drugs]."
