Low infection rate attracts UN AIDS boss

    JOHANNESBURG

    The UN Special Envoy for AIDS in Africa, Stephen Lewis, is visiting Uganda until 31 July to appraise the country's anti-AIDS progress.

    The East African country boasts success in reducing its HIV infection rate from more than 30 percent in the early 1990s to around 6 percent in 2003. A recent UNAIDS report again revised rates downwards to just 4.1 percent of adults aged between 15 and 49.

    Lewis is expected to meet senior government representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, UN agencies and NGOs, visit internally displaced people's camps and participate in a public hearing on antiretroviral therapy.
