Global Fund millions pledged despite shortfall

    JOHANNESBURG
    Two new grants of US $254 million for Zambia's fight against HIV/AIDS and $43 million for combating malaria have been approved by the Global AIDS Fund over the next five years. The Fund's executive director, Richard Feachem, described the country as a "star performer" in the administration of Global Fund resources for tackling AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Research shows that these three diseases remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Zambia. Meanwhile, Feachem disclosed that the Fund had a shortfall of about $100 million of its $1.65 billion budget this year.
