Mandela to address address AIDS conference

    JOHANNESBURG

    Former South African President Nelson Mandela will address some 15,000 delegates on 15 July at the International AIDS Conference in Bangkok, Thailand.

    Mandela is expected to focus on what the participants can do to help his "46664" campaign, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the International AIDS Society said in a joint statement earlier this week.

    Named after his prison number during his nearly 20-year incarceration at the South African prison, Robben Island, 46664 is a phone and Internet campaign to raise awareness and funds to tackle HIV/AIDS in Africa.

    The event will be introduced by Richard Feachem, executive director of Global AIDS Fund, be supported by Peter Piot, UNAIDS executive director and will be freely available the following day on a webcast at www.kaisernetwork.org.
