Post-war conditions fuel AIDS increase

    JOHANNESBURG

    HIV/AIDS experts have expressed concern that post-war conditions in Angola could bring about an "inevitable" increase in prevalence rates.

    The large-scale return of refugees coupled with a lack of HIV/AIDS knowledge and poor health services have combined to create conditions that could lead to a marked increase in HIV transmission in the country, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said.

    "What is clear is that we must act quickly to prevent Angola from going the way of neighbouring countries," UNICEF Angola Representative Mario Ferrari said.

    Research shows that of the close to one million HIV cases in the country, only 13,000 have been reported.
