A new report from the Actuarial Association of South Africa suggests that HIV/AIDS is still the single biggest cause of death in the country.
Researchers from the institute estimate that some 900 South Africans could die daily of an AIDS-related illness over the next 12 months.
According to the report, the death toll was expected to reach a peak of 1,100 people per day by 2014 due to a time frame of about 10 years between infection and death.
The association's Leigh Johnson, told a local newspaper, Die Burger, the death toll would only peak then, after the rate of new infections reached its maximum levels in 1998.
