South African AIDS activist group, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), has accused the government of dragging its feet over the roll-out of an effective national treatment plan.
A TAC People's Health Summit on the implementation of the government's AIDS treatment programme at the weekend noted that less than 10,000 people had access to anti-AIDS drugs at government hospitals and clinics.
The national plan had called for 53,000 HIV-positive people to be on treatment by March 2004.
TAC recommended the implementation of an emergency programme to recruit health workers in poorly performing provinces to increase the number of patients being treated.
