On course for three million treatment goal - WHO

    The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced on Wednesday that it would achieve its goal of getting three million HIV-positive people on antiretroviral drugs (ARV) by 2005 through a UN-led Global fund.

    Alex Ross, Chief of staff of WHO's HIV/AIDS group, said the target would be reached with the aid of global campaigns and the work of individual countries. "When you add it all up, you quickly get to the point of having 3 million people," he said.

    The initiative, also known as the "3 by 5 plan", was announced by WHO Director-General Lee Jong-wook last year in a bid to accelerate the rollout of treatment programmes.
