The Relief organisation, World Vision, is providing interpersonal psychotherapy to people affected by AIDS in Uganda's rural communities.
Research, conducted together with the Johns Hopkins University in America, found that 20 percent of people living in rural Uganda showed signs of AIDS-related depression.
In an interview with the BBC, World Vision group facilitator Christine Nanyondo said, "before, there were relatives; they could give you suggestions - now relatives have died and even the neighbour you run into is depressed", as the pandemic had broken all social norms.
World Vision is seeking to combat depression through therapy groups that resemble community support networks destroyed by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
