US pours in more aid to fight AIDS

    JOHANNESBURG

    Uganda has received US $51 million from President George Bush's US $15 billion emergency plan for AIDS relief.

    The funds are in addition to US $96 million recently provided by the same plan, and will be used to provide treatment to 60,000 HIV-positive Ugandans, and care and support to a further 300,000.

    President Bush's Emergency Plan, which targets HIV/AIDS in 15 countries in Africa, aims to double the number of people with access to AIDS drugs in Africa in its first year.

    Global AIDS Coordinator Randall Tobias told local newspaper New Vision that the additional funds showed the US government's commitment to AIDS treatment and care.
