HIV testing centres for armed forces

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Kampala City Council (KCC) is to set up HIV/AIDS counselling and testing centers in police and army quarters in an effort to combat the epidemic in the armed forces.

    "The prevalence in Kampala is 13.3 percent and we know that police and army officers are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS because of the nature of their work," Dr Livingstone Makanga, district representative for The Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, said at a KCC HIV/AIDS sensitisation workshop for police and army officials.

    Makanga said the aim of the centres, which will be resourced by the Global Fund, was to encourage police and army officials to know their status, go for counselling, and fight the epidemic in the capital.
