Local AIDS activists join international protests

South African AIDS activist group, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), was on Thursday part of a global protest demanding US President George W Bush to do more for the global HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Some 500 angry demonstrators in Johannesburg accused Bush of undermining the fight against AIDS by limiting access to condoms, reproductive choices and generic anti-AIDS drugs.

"We promote choice, we don't dictate like George Bush. His policy is killing people, it is making the problem worse," TAC national secretary Mark Heywood was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

Kenya and Zimbabwe were also expected to join the global protests, but demonstrations had not materialised in either of the countries by mid-afternoon.
