New condom launched in AIDS prevention campaign

As part of its national campaign to tackle HIV/AIDS, the South African government on Monday launched a new "sexy and fun" free condom.

The new condom, called "Choice", replaces the former brand after studies showed that South Africans considered the earlier government-issued condoms as unreliable and of poorer quality than pharmacy-bought brands.

"We realised that we needed to change the way we market government condoms to maximise their impact," Agence France-Presse quoted Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang as saying.

Some 400 million condoms are expected to be distributed this year, mostly to young people.
